The Vicus Juliacum was the first documented settlement of Jülich. The town’s history began over 2000 years ago. It is still called the city by the river and the city in the river today. Due to its location on the narrowest ford of the Rur, Jülich was equally important for travelers and conquerors. A blessing and a curse for a medium-sized town, which today is often said to be too small for its size.
